Comedor in Newton serves many inventive dishes, and that doesn’t stop with the ice cream. Restaurant chef-owner Jakob White churns out the frozen dessert, tinkering with unexpected flavor combinations that turn out super-creamy and heavenly. They change weekly, so it’s not a good idea to fall in love with one, although sometimes, White says, he’ll bring back flavors that customers clamor for, such as honey porcini. The sweet-savory ice cream “tastes like coffee caramel and has umami,’’ he says. Churned with dairy from Mapleline Farm in Hadley, White’s surprise flavor one week was smoked honey Gouda, another week charred sweet corn, which has a roasted taste from the charred kernels. For ice cream he calls “strawberry toast,’’ White toasts brioche and purees local strawberries. He has also featured smoked espresso bean and chai sunflower. “I’m definitely bringing back vanilla jalapeno,’’ says the chef. Diners can order two scoops ($6) for dessert and also pints to go ($10).
