To really appreciate this modified Cape, it helps to think of the house as if it were a quilt stitched together over time and the rooms are the pieces of cloth.

The front door, set in the center of the home, leads into a vestibule with a Vermont-slate floor. This opens into a living room where the focal point is a fireplace with a white wooden mantel and brick firebox, positioned to warm any new arrivals quickly. That fireplace, though, is more than meets the eye; it’s double-sided. It warms the den, a keepsake from the original house with dark, wide-plank pine floors and exposed beams. The flooring in the rest of the home is a mixture of the original pine flooring and oak hardwood.

To the left of the living room is the eat-in kitchen, a mixture of stainless-steel appliances, marble countertops, and gray solid-wood cabinets. The kitchen has a dining area, but the four-seat island, topped by a dark granite, is a great place to enjoy a cup of tea. A red-brick chimney bisects the rear wall, adding visual interest, and a slider leads to the deck and the backyard beyond. Store your exotic teas in the walk-in pantry.

To the right of the living room is the master suite, a decidedly 21st-century concept. It offers access to the deck, a walk-in closet, and a shower-only bath with a single vanity. All of the bathrooms have been updated with marble counters and subway tile. A half bath and office (part of the master wing) complete this floor.

A broad stairwell leads to three bedrooms, which range from nicely sized to smallish. They share a full bath. The third floor houses a loft the current owner uses as a sewing room for her high-end nightgowns. It’s accessed via a “hobbit door,’’ the broker said. The basement is unfinished, and the electrical, heating, roof, plumbing, structure, and septic systems have been updated in the past decade.

A mahogany deck runs along the back of the house and ends in a covered patio. It overlooks the 0.82-acre lot, of which sections remain densely wooded. The home is a brisk walk to North Hill Country Club, a nine-hole municipal golf course.

An outbuilding offers parking for one vehicle and a heated bonus room or studio on the second level. This room is included in the home’s square footage.
