Do a good deed: Eat pastrami
Michael’s Deli

Jan. 14 has been declared National Hot Pastrami Sandwich Day by someone, somewhere. Like you need an excuse. Celebrate with a run to the nearest deli for a hot pastrami on rye, slathered with mustard; a cheesy-gooey pastrami Reuben; or a Rachel, made with pastrami and cole slaw. At Michael’s Deli in Brookline, owner Steven Peljovich has a few other variations on the menu, including a Juban (a “Jewish Cuban,’’ which happens to be Peljovich’s heritage), a pressed sub with pastrami, smoked ham, pickles, and Swiss cheese; the Thorty Black and Gold sandwich, named after former Boston Bruin Shawn Thornton, with black pastrami, cheddar, hot peppers, and honey mustard; and a pastrami dog, a Pearl frank wrapped in pastrami, topped with sauerkraut. (We never said this would be a day of healthful eating.) Peljovich is donating 10 percent of the day’s sales to the Greg Hill Foundation, the charity of WAAF morning radio talk show host Greg Hill, whose mission is providing financial assistance to local families touched by tragedy. Consider it noshing for a good cause. Michael’s Deli, 256 Harvard St., Coolidge Corner, Brookline, 617-738-3354, www.michaelsdelibrookline.com. Lisa Zwirn
