Finders, keepers.
That’s the idea behind the “art drop’’ that celebrity artist Brian Fox is organizing. He’s going to hide one of his paintings, and whoever finds it gets to keep it.
“It’s like a scavenger hunt,’’ he said.
Fox will offer clues to his followers via Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook. Fans can also visit his studio this Friday from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. to receive an advanced clue to give them a head start. It will also be an opportunity to meet Fox, tour his studio, and see the artwork before it’s hidden.
The artist lives in Somerset, the town he grew up in. His studio and gallery are in Fall River.
Fox has made a career for himself by creating lifelike paintings and drawings of actors, musicians, and celebrities, including and Mark and Donnie Wahlberg, and Rob Gronkowski. He’s been commissioned to do work for Major League Baseball, the National Hockey League, and the New England Patriots.
In May, his portrait of Steven Tyler, a 38-by-48-inch oil on canvas titled “Walk this Way,’’ was auctioned in New York City to raise money for Tyler’s charity, Janie’s Fund.
Oh, and did we mention that he’s currently working on two new paintings of Tom Brady?
Not bad for a guy who didn’t pick up a paint brush until his senior year of college, and then turned down an animation job at Disney right out of college.
“It’s pretty surreal on some levels,’’ said Fox, who admits his road to success was “not the usual path.’’
About 12 years ago, he quit his full-time job to focus on his art. He became a stay-at-home dad, raising his two sons (now 13 and 10).
“It was tough,’’ said Fox, who recalled times when he’d only bring in $60 a week. “People were calling me crazy.’’
But Fox has no regrets. Over the years his portfolio grew and so did his clientele. He even ended up working for Disney — on his own terms. Today he creates original artwork that’s displayed in galleries at Walt Disney parks and cruise ships.
Now he’s gearing up for his open studio event and the upcoming scavenger hunt. What will he be hiding? A 23-by-34-inch canvas print depicting Brady and Matt Light playing in the “Snow Bowl’’ game.
