Where to Tapestry, a Fenway restaurant in the former Church space, from husband-and-wife team Meghann Ward (Coppa) and Kevin Walsh (Clio).
What for Two concepts in one. Eat oysters, snacks, and wood-fired pizza in the Expo Kitchen, or more elaborate fare in the Club Room.
The scene In the brightly lighted Expo Kitchen, people gather at the bar and at small tables. There’s a big open kitchen in the center of things. Hip-hop plays. The overhead lights look like sea urchins, and banquettes striped yellow, white, and aqua feel like the Mediterranean, or maybe Miami. A woman in a Mexican tunic and oversize glasses shares a pie with her curly-maned mate; in the corner, two women are deep in conversation. Meanwhile, in the Club Room, the lights are low and the mood is intimate. Decor here is inspired by the mood of Havana, all jungle fronds and patterned carpets and a four-sided fireplace. Friends cluster at a table, taking the same photo of the same food with four different iPhones.
What you’re eating On a warm evening, perhaps some oysters and a jicama salad with fluke ceviche, light and bright. On any evening, one of the excellent charred pies. Right now, the one with shishitos and ramp pesto is a fine bet. There’s soft-shell crab with charred avocado, and ramps appear again in a dish of farfalle with mushrooms, sorrel, and miso-goat butter. Finish the meal with rhubarb and pistachio pound cake with Urfa pepper.
Care for a drink? Microbrews, a happy selection of wine (including sherry and sake to pair with oysters), and a handful of unusual house cocktails — a sherry lemonade with pickled green strawberries, for instance.
Overheard “We’ve been peeking in the window and waiting for our pizza,’’ exclaims a neighborhood gentleman, strolling in and looking about. “Well, welcome!’’ staffers say, and show him around the space. “Old hip-hop has taken over local restaurants,’’ one patron comments, taking in the soundtrack. “That’s a good thing.’’ A woman samples the fluke ceviche: “That’s good. Oh, that’s good.’’ Her friend takes a bite, lets loose an expletive or two, and then the dish is demolished. In the Club Room, people appreciate the decor. “That fireplace is gorgeous,’’ a glamazon comments. “This room is so nice.’’ Her friend agrees, with qualifications: “That monkey in the mural is creeping me out.’’
