HONORING VETERANS Lexington’s monthly live performance series, Munroe Saturday Nights, honors veterans in February with a reading of “Nighthawks,’’ a new play by Lexington playwright Merrill Meadow.
The play is a sequel to Meadow’s earlier work “Purple Hearts,’’ expanding on the lives of the characters and their increasingly complex relationships. Both plays are set in Camden, N.J., where Meadow lived as a child and returned in the early 1980s as a high school teacher.
Two of the central characters are Marine Corps veterans who have suffered the physical and emotional scars of battle, and contributions collected at the free reading will benefit Home Base, a nonprofit based at Massachusetts General Hospital that aids veterans with traumatic brain injuries, post-traumatic stress disorder, and other hardships related to recent service.
Meadow hopes to use audience and actor response from the reading to continue the creative process and seek a full-scale production of his work.
The reading takes place Saturday, Feb. 20, at 7:30 p.m. at First Parish Lexington, 7 Harrington Rd., Lexington. For more information, call 781-862-6040 or go to www.munroecenter.org.
