A Worcester man is accused of paying $5,000 to smuggle a 14-year-old girl from El Salvador to the United States, then holding the girl captive and sexually assaulting her.
Law enforcement officials are not identifying the victim, but Worcester police said she apparently began communicating with Luis Santos, 22, over Facebook from El Salvador. Santos paid $5,000 to have the girl smuggled into the United States, police alleged.
She arrived in Worcester in mid-December and was allegedly forced to live in Santos’s Kinsbury Street apartment. Police said she did not want to have a “romantic relationship with Santos’’ but was forced to share his bed.
The victim accused Santos of touching her against her will on multiple occasions, police said.
Sergeant Michael Hanlon said evidence suggests there was another adult living with Santos but declined to give details.
The girl was locked in a room and was unable to use the telephone or attend school most of the time, police alleged. But sometime in January, Santos allowed her to go to school.
“At this time, she reached out to family friends from El Salvador who currently live in Worcester and went to stay with them out of fear of returning to Santos’ apartment,’’ police said in a statement.
Police arrested Santos Friday and charged him with kidnapping and human trafficking of a minor.
He is scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday in Worcester, Hanlon said.
The girl is staying with family friends, Hanlon said.
