The story behind Red Lantern’s themed lamps

Where: Red Lantern

What: Lamps made from Chinese acupuncture training models, riddled with tiny holes. They’re positioned throughout the slinky Asian restaurant.

Whose Idea: Red Lantern co-owner Ed Kane procured these lifelike lighting fixtures from pal Kevin McPherson, who runs furniture shop Mohr & McPherson. “When he shipped them from China, the containers almost looked too lifelike — in some cases, they got held,’’ Kane says with a chuckle. Once safely in Boston, the models were fitted with custom lampshades from the Innovation District’s Blanche Field and placed throughout the restaurant. (Kane also has a few at home. “I have an old Buddha in my house from Thailand, and they surround it. It’s an interesting look,’’ he says.) Customers enjoy posing with them, too. “Most people are fairly respectful, but others are quite funny with their interest in acupuncture,’’ he muses. “When you look at them, you think: Oh, my. There are so many spots. You must have to really learn to be a good acupuncturist. You need to know exactly where to go.’’
