Pro Bowl safety Malcolm Jenkins said he planned to lead his Philadelphia Eagles teammates in a protest he said was ‘‘not an anti-police thing’’ during the national anthem before Monday night’s game at Chicago.
‘‘I was very clear: It’s not an anti-police thing. In fact, the police are a key part of the solution in this issue,’’ Jenkins said Saturday.
Jenkins said there were ‘‘mixed feelings’’ among the players, so the demonstration wouldn’t include everyone.
The Eagles didn’t protest before the season opener last week out of respect because it was 9/11.
Ravens mourn loss
Clarence Brooks, a former UMass offensive guard and team captain (1970-72) from New Bedford who served 24 seasons as an NFL assistant, including the last 11 as a defensive line coach with the Baltimore Ravens, died Saturday in Weston, Fla., from esophegeal and stomach cancer. He was 65.
He coached the defensive line until this spring when he began treatment for his illness.
During his 11-year run in Baltimore, the Ravens allowed the fewest rushing touchdowns and second-fewest rushing yards per game.
‘‘We loved that man,’’ Ravens coach John Harbaugh said. ‘‘One of the finest coaches I have ever met, he changed the lives and influenced players and coaches for the better.’’
Packers’ Shields out
The Packers said cornerback Sam Shields (concussion) won’t play Sunday night in Minnesota . . . The Chiefs waived defensive lineman Rakeem Nunez-Roches and elevated offensive lineman Jordan Devey from the practice squad for Sunday’s game in Houston.
