BC closes in on Hockey East title

Ryan Fitzgerald scored a pair of goals and second-ranked Boston College finished a weekend sweep of Vermont with a 4-1 win Saturday night in Burlington, Vt., solidifying its hold on first place in Hockey East.

The win gave the Eagles (23-4-5, 14-1-5) a two-point lead over Providence and a three-point edge over Notre Dame heading into the regular season’s final weekend. The Friars swept a pair from the Fighting Irish over the weekend to drop Notre Dame out of first place.

Mario Puskarich got Vermont (12-18-3, 6-11-3) on the board first, beating Thatcher Demko (30 saves) at 14:18 of the first, but Adam Gilmore tied it with 1:04 to go in the period.

After a scoreless second period, Austin Cangelosi put BC in command by beating Packy Munson (33 saves) just 2:51 into the third. Fitzgerald scored his 17th and 18th goals of the season late to seal the win.

Northeastern 4, UConn 1 — Garret Cockerill and Nolan Stevens scored 53 seconds apart early in the second period to break a scoreless tie and Northeastern (14-13-5, 8-8-4 Hockey East) swept the home-and-home series from UConn (9-19,4, 4-12-4).

Sam Kurker and Kevin Roy scored third-period goals to seal it for NU, which has won six straight and gone 12-1-2 in its last 15 games.

BU 3, New Hampshire 2 — The ninth-ranked Terriers (18-9-5, 11-5-4 Hockey East) jumped out to a 3-0 lead midway through the second period then hung on to turn back the visiting Wildcats (10-16-6, 4-10-6).

Harvard 7, Colgate 4 — Kyle Criscuolo broke the third and final tie of the game by scoring with 2:47 to go and the No. 13 Crimson (15-8-4, 11-5-4 ECAC) beat the visiting Raiders (8-22-4, 4-14-2). Jimmy Vesey had two goals and an assist for Harvard.

Quinnipiac 3, Union 3 — Eli Lichtenwald scored with 6:25 to go and the host Dutchmen (12-11-9, 5-8-6 ECAC) tied the top-ranked Bobcats (23-2-7, 14-1-5).

Maine 3, Merrimack 2 — Daniel Perez scored 1:49 into overtime and the host Black Bears (8-20-6, 5-13-2 Hockey East) beat the Warriors (9-16-7, 3-10-7) after blowing a two-goal lead in the final 1:43 of regulation. Merrimack got goals from Chris LeBlanc (18:17) and Brett Seney (19:38) after pulling goalie Drew Vogler to force OT.

Men’s basketball

North Carolina 96, Miami 71 — Brice Johnson had 16 points and 15 rebounds and the fifth-ranked Tar Heels rebounded from a tough loss to Duke to blow out the No. 11 Hurricanes in Chapel Hill, N.C.

In a matchup of teams tied for the league lead, North Carolina (22-5, 11-3) shot 54 percent and shut down Miami (21-5, 10-4) at every turn to lead by as many as 38 points. The Tar Heels had six players score in double figures and flirted with their second 100-point performance this season.

Louisville 71, Duke 64 — Damion Lee scored 24 points, including three 3-pointers during a second-half rally that erased a 13-point deficit, and the No. 18 Cardinals (21-6, 10-4 ACC) got past the No. 20 Blue Devils (20-7, 9-5) in Louisville.

Louisville trailed, 44-31, with 17:10 remaining before battling back and using an 8-0 run with consecutive threes by Lee and a slam by Jaylen Johnson after Chinanu Onuaku stole an inbounds pass for a 58-55 lead. Lee added another long-range shot and Johnson made a jumper to make it 63-59.

Officials then whistled Duke guard Grayson Allen for charging — his fifth foul — and assessed him a subsequent technical foul for arguing the call to end his day after scoring a game-high 29 points for the Blue Devils, who had beaten a ranked team in their last three games.

Harvard 76, Cornell 74 — Tommy McCarthy scored 21 points and hit the winning layup with six seconds left as the visiting Crimson (11-15, 3-7 Ivy) erased a 15-point halftime deficit to get past the Big Red (9-15, 2-8).

Rhode Island 77, Duquesne 74 — Jared Terrell had 20 points and Hassan Martin added 19 as the host Rams (15-12, 7-7 Atlantic 10) held off the Dukes (15-12, 5-9).

Cincinnati 65, UConn 60 — Freshman Jalen Adams scored a season-high 19 points, 17 in the second half, but the host Bearcats (20-8, 10-5 American Athletic) beat the Huskies (19-8, 9-5).

Binghamton 81, UMass Lowell 77 — Isaac White hit five 3-pointers and finished with 20 points but the host Bearcats (7-20, 4-10 America East) swept the season series from the River Hawks (11-17, 7-8).

Columbia 73, Dartmouth 54 — Grant Mullins scored 17 points and the host Lions (19-8, 8-2 Ivy) turned back the Big Green (9-15, 3-7), who were led by freshman Evan Boudreaux’s 16 points.

New Hampshire 74, Hartford 63 — Tanner Leissner scored 13 points and grabbed 15 rebounds and the host Wildcats (17-10, 10-4 America East) turned back the Hawks (8-21, 3-11).

Vermont 99, UMBC 54 — Cam Ward had a perfect night and the visiting Catamounts (17-12, 9-5 America East) rode his hot hand to a rout of the Retrievers (6-23, 2-12). The sophomore was 7 for 7 from the field to set a career high for field goals made, hit all six 3-pointers he launched to set a career high, and was 4 for 4 from the line to finish with a career-high 24 points.

Saint Anselm 102, Bentley 83 — Tyler McFarland scored his 2,000th career point and Alex Furness got to 1,000 for the visiting Falcons (18-7, 15-5), but the Hawks (20-5, 15-5) got double figures in scoring from all five starters to move into a tie atop the Northeast-10.

McFarland, who scored 19 points in the loss, is the third Bentley play to reach 2,000 points, joining Bill Holden and Jason Westrol. Harrison Taggart led Saint Anselm with 21 points and 11 rebounds.

Women’s basketball

UConn 81, East Carolina 41 — Breanna Stewart had 16 points and 11 boards and the top-ranked Huskies clinched a share of their third straight American Athletic title and extended their winning streak to 63 games by routing the Pirates in their road finale.

If all goes according to plan, UConn (26-0, 15-0) won’t leave its home state again until the Huskies head back to the Final Four.

Bucknell 72, BU 59 — Troi Melton scored a career-high 24 points but the visiting Bison (20-6, 14-1 Patriot) used a big third quarter to pull away from the Terriers (3-23, 3-12).

Holy Cross 59, American 50 — Lisa Mifsud and Infiniti Thomas-Waheed each scored 17 points and the visiting Crusaders (12-14, 9-6 Patriot) got past the Eagles (6-20, 4-11).

Harvard 68, Cornell 63 — Shilpa Tummala had 15 points and Kit Metoyer and AnnMarie Healey each added 14 as the host Crimson (11-11, 6-3 Ivy) broke away from a halftime tie to edge the Big Red (13-10, 5-4).

Women’s hockey

BC 9, Providence 1 — Andie Anastos had a hat trick and Haley Skarupa added a pair of goals as the top-ranked Eagles (34-0, 24-0 Hockey East) stormed past the host Friars (10-22-2, 6-16-2).

Northeastern 6, BU 2 — Kendall Coyne scored twice and the No. 6 Huskies (26-7-1, 20-4-0) broke open a close game with three third-period goals to knock off the Terriers (20-12-2, 17-5-2) at Matthews Arena. The win clinched the No. 2 seed in the Hockey East tournament for Northeastern.

Cornell 3, Harvard 2 — Sydney Daniels scored twice to rally the visiting Crimson (16-10-3, 12-7-3 ECAC) from a two-goal deficit but Jess Brown scored 47 seconds into overtime to lift the Big Red (13-12-4, 9-9-4).
