The Hingham boys’ lacrosse team swarmed coach John Todd as soon as the final whistle blew in Thursday’s 17-0 victory over eighth-seeded Oliver Ames in a Division 2 South quarterfinal game at Hingham.
Sure, the No. 1-seeded Harbormen (18-5) were happy to advance — they play fifth-seeded Scituate in the semifinals — but the day was special for another reason.
Todd became the winningest boys’ lacrosse coach in state history, surpassing Rick Mazzei with his 406th career victory.
The team captains presented Todd with a special gift after the game. As the squad huddled around their steadfast skipper, Todd unwrapped a signed team photo, complete with a congratulatory message from another coaching legend in Massachusetts: Bill Belichick.
“The support just has been huge in Hingham,’’ Todd said.
“The level of competition here, the level of athletic ability has just quadrupled.’’
Todd has been at Hingham’s helm for 27 seasons, but the Harbormen were able to check off a few new boxes this season. Hingham won the Patriot League, ending a 16-year title drought. A big boost came from a win over Duxbury, the first of its kind since 1999.
“A lot of firsts,’’ Todd said.
“It does make this team, this year, a little more special.’’
The Harbormen certainly looked special in dismantling Oliver Ames.
Hingham scored three unassisted goals in the first two minutes, and never looked back.
Sophomore defender Marshall Terres opened the scoring 30 seconds in. Senior middie Mark Tocchio and junior attack Marc O’Rourke scored two goals in 11 seconds just before the 10-minute mark to give the hosts a 3-0 lead.
Seven Harbormen scored in the opening quarter as Hingham surged to a 9-0 advantage.
O’Rourke led the way with a hat trick. Senior middies Tocchio and Jake Brodie and junior attack Jack Hennessey each added a pair of goals.
It was a tough end to the season for Oliver Ames (10-10), but it captured the program’s first postseason win Tuesday.
And coach Chris DiGiacomo will return 23 varsity players next season.
“I just said to one of my boys, ‘we’re not where we want to be, but we’re certainly not where we were,’?’’ DiGiacomo said.
“I think the future’s bright, but we have a long way to go.’’

Belmont 4, Beverly 2 — The last time Belmont and Beverly met, in the Division 2 North Sectional two years ago, it took 16 innings to decide the outcome. Thursday’s matchup was just as tight.
It took Belmont 13 innings to defeat Beverly and advance to the sectional tournament, but it wasn’t easy.
Belmont scored twice in the top of the eighth to take a 2-0 lead, but Luke Samperi smashed a two-run homer in the bottom half to tie score for Beverly.
“Cole [Bartels] and Cal [Christofori] took the team aside and told them that it’s still a tie game, we didn’t lose,’’ Belmont coach Jim Brown said. “They kept preaching that and kept the team in it.’’
Belmont finally broke through in the 13th as Connor Dacey’s infield single scored Bryan Goodwin for a 3-2 lead. Belmont then added a run on a sacrifice fly.
Christofori, who has not allowed an earned run in 15 innings this season, pitched the final five frames for Belmont.
Belmont starter Bartels had 11 strikeouts and allowed just two hits in seven innings.
“He was pumping it,’’ Brown said. “His slider was working, his fastball was at about 90. He was just keeping them at bay.’’
