A high pick in a low place

It’s not time to panic if you own Rams running back Todd Gurley. It’s probably time to worry, though.

Consider this scenario: A guy I work with told me Monday that he needed 14 points from Gurley — who was playing against San Francisco Monday night — to win his matchup. The guy seemed worried.

“You’ve got this,’’ I told him. “That’s why Gurley was your first-round pick — to get you these 14 points.’’

This guy probably isn’t going to come to me for reassurance any time soon.

The Rams embarrassed themselves Monday night during a 28-0 loss to San Francisco. Not scoring during an NFL game in 2016 is mind-boggling, and when the top running back off the board in most fantasy drafts is the featured guy in that offense, we have to wonder how this is going to play out.

Gurley is too talented to be shut down week after week, but his owners are facing the real possibility of inconsistency because of the terrible offense in which he plays. That’s not what anyone signs up for in a first-round pick.

Three up:

Joe Flacco, QB, Baltimore: Everyone loves Philadelphia quarterback Carson Wentz at the moment, but let’s not forget he opened against Cleveland. Flacco is next up for the young Browns. Get him in your lineup.

Rashad Jennings, RB, New York Giants: New York hosts the Saints, so let’s keep riding the skill players who face New Orleans and its matador defense.

Kyle Rudoloph, TE, Minnesota: I’m getting my yearly tout of Rudolph out of the way early. Whoever plays quarterback for the Vikings — Shaun Hill or Sam Bradford — will target Rudolph often, especially in a divisional slugfest against Green Bay.

Three down:

Kirk Cousins, QB, Washington: Cousins gave his owners big passing yardage (329) in Week 1, but he looked terrible in the process. He was hailed as a value pick in the late rounds of fantasy drafts, but for now, I’ll pass.

C.J. Uzomah, TE, Cincinnati: Uzomah is likely available in your league, and he’s filling in for the always-heavily-targeted Tyler Eifert, but he’s not worth acquiring.

Carson Wentz, QB, Philadelphia: The Eagles will be at Soldier Field, and Wentz will have his hands full against a decent Chicago defense. He will be a cheap option in daily fantasy, but you’ll get what you pay for.
