BELGIUM CHOCOLATIER NOW IN BOSTON

Top Belgium chocolatier Neuhaus, founded in Brussels by Jean Neuhaus 150 years ago, opened a small shop in October in Faneuil Hall’s South Market. The company invented the Belgium praline (not the Louisiana kind with nuts, but chocolates that are filled and enrobed in more chocolate), and also the ballotin, a box especially for chocolates. On display here are 60 types of exquisite chocolates ($62 a pound) and other confections, including marzipan and bars. Some pralines are from original recipes and mark the company’s history, and are distinguished by names: Caprice is a nougatine triangle filled with cream and covered with dark chocolate, made for the 1958 World’s Fair in Brussels; and Albert, a dark chocolate round with a hazelnut filling created a year later to honor the wedding of Belgium’s Prince Albert. Boxes with assortments (from $16) are available, a fine gift for your holiday host.
