WESTFIELD — Before the girls’ relay events had started at Westfield State College, Milton coach Dion Crichlow said she and her team had already congratulated Tewksbury on its state championship.
Trailing by 10 points Saturday, the Wildcats scored 18 points in the final two events to tie Tewksbury for a share of the girls’ All-State track and field championship.
“Both teams deserved it today,’’ Crichlow said, after the co-champions took a picture together on the podium holding the title banner. “At the end of the day, both teams are proud of each other.’’
Milton’s 4?x?400 team of Ali Belash, Josie Cousineau, Elise O’Leary, and Colette O’Leary finished ahead of Tewksbury by just over a second in the last event of the meet.
Tewksbury needed strong performances from its relay teams to stay on top. Both their 4?x?800 and 4?x?400 teams finished in second place for 16 crucial points.
Sophomore Rachel Sessa gave Tewksbury a huge boost as well, winning the mile with a time of 4:53.94.
Wellseley (29), Newton South (26), North Reading (24), Cambridge (24), Worcester Tech (20), Peabody (20), Norton (19), and Oakmont (18) rounded out the top 10.
Senior Margie Cullen of Needham seemed unfazed by the upper-80s heat, posting a blistering time of 10:27.59 to win the 2-mile.
“Everybody is facing the same conditions during the race,’’ Cullen said. “It’s nothing I can’t deal with.’’
Cullen had a goal of breaking the 17-year old meet record of 10:24.21 by Shalane Flanagan of Marblehead.
In the 200 meters, junior Alyssa Zee of Ashland (24.46) set a personal best and barely squeaked past junior Brooke-Lynn Williams of Norton (24.48).
“Brooke and I are really good friends so it’s like competitive friendly competition and I love it,’’ Zee said. “We go back and forth in everything.’’
Zee also took third place in the long jump.
It wasn’t a total miss for Williams, who moments after the 200 won the 100-meter dash by .14 seconds over Cambridge senior Brianna Duncan.
Sweeping the long jump and the triple jump was Worcester Tech junior Adja Sackor. Duncan was second in both events.
Hopkinton sophomore Caitlyn Halloran set a meet record in the pentathlon with her score of 3,028, shattering the old record of 2,767 set in 2014.
North Reading senior Julia Valenti left the rest of the pole vault competition behind with her mark of 12 feet 4 inches, almost 2 feet higher than runner-up and teammate Rachel Hill.
Valenti also finished third in the 100-meter hurdles, behind Madelyn Sessler of Plymouth South (14.78), and Peabody’s Cynthia Aroke (14.87).
Senior Devan Walsh of Danvers won the javelin (137-4), junior Abbie Mokwuah of Longmeadow took home the shot put (41-5¾), Latin Academy’s Ashley Lewis won the 400 (55.47), and Dartmouth senior Skylar Barthelmes won the discus (135-10).
