Nelson perfect as Norton rolls

Norton softball pitcher Kelly Nelson has dominated teams all season from inside the circle. Saturday was no different as Nelson pitched her second perfect game of the year, leading the host Lancers past Pembroke, 6-0, in a Division 2 South sectional first-round game.

“She’s getting better and better,’’ Norton coach Wade Lizotte said of his sophomore pitcher. “Her composure on the mound is just incredible. She put the ball where she needed to put the ball.’’

Nelson got two batters to ground out to start the game before finding a groove and striking out the next seven.

“I was feeling a little shaky [in the first inning]. I wasn’t quite getting my spins down,’’ Nelson said. “But by the second I think I relaxed my nerves and got going.’’

Nelson finished with 14 strikeouts. She kept runners off the bases long enough for the Lancers’ offense to heat up.

Through four innings, Norton (20-1) had six hits but left runners in scoring positions. But in the fifth inning, the Lancers put up four runs.

Alexandra Frontino led off with a single down the third base line and then stole second. Taylor Cibotti then reached on a well-executed bunt to put runners on first and third. After Pembroke pitcher Taryn Cahill walked the next batter to load the bases, Frontino was awarded home on a balk by Cahill.

“I’m really glad [the game wasn’t decided by a balk],’’ Lizotte said. “The rules are the rules, and I apologized to the pitcher and the coach but the rules are the rules, and I think the umpire had the right call there.’’

The bases were still loaded with no outs with Nelson stepping to the plate. Before Nelson could get to hit, Cibotti was able to score on a wild pitch, giving Norton a 2-0 lead.

Nelson then hit a two-run single to put the Lancers up, 4-0.

“We had a good game plan going into today and the girls executed it very well,’’ Lizotte said. “I just knew it was a matter of time before the runs started coming.’’

Norton added to its lead in the sixth. Frontino smacked a double to center and was advanced with a sacrifice bunt by Cibotti. Then, with two outs, Stephanie Nosky hit a line drive down the third base line to bring Frontino home. The throw to first went past the first baseman and Nosky was able to reach second. She was then brought home on a single by Carli Arcaro, putting the Lancers up, 6-0.

Nelson struck out the first batter of the seventh before getting the next two to pop out and secure the perfect game.

The Lancers will face Archbishop Williams Monday.
