ROCK SOLID The New York City-based company Dušan Týnek Dance Theatre returns to Cape Ann this summer for “Quarry Dance 5’’ Friday through Sunday, July 29-31.
As artists in residence at the Windhover Performing Arts Center in Gloucester, the company creates and choreographs site-specific dances in a local quarry for the public.
This year, the dancers use the architecture, cliffs, ledges, paths, and water of Barker’s Quarry to celebrate its uniqueness and beauty.
Boston-based saxophonist Russ Gershon accompanies the four dance performances.
The quarry, off Leverett street, sits on the Gabriel and Selma Kleimola Reservation, which is jointly owned privately by a descendant and publicly by the Essex County Greenbelt Association.
Performances, which run about one hour, are 5:30 p.m. Friday; 11 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. Saturday; and 1 p.m. Sunday.
Seating is first-come, first-served with chairs provided. People are welcome to bring blankets to sit on, as well.
Following the dances, Greenbelt offers half-hour educational tours of the quarry.
There is van transportation from the Lanesville Community Center starting 45 minutes prior to performances and following the show.
The events are free and open to the public; donations are welcome. No reservations are required. In the event of rain, the performances will be canceled.

OPPORTUNITY KNOCKS A selection of work by artists in the Haverhill and Newburyport OpArt program is on display at Northern Essex Community College in Haverhill through Aug. 18.
Opportunity Works encourages and supports adults with developmental disabilities to enrich their lives through art.
In 2004, the Newburyport Art Association started a weekly art program at Opportunity Works Inc. using basic materials such as crayons, poster paint, and construction paper.
Today, the art education outreach program is managed by coordinators Jenna Signore and Rachel Fort, with the help of volunteers, and includes the involvement of talented local artists.
Participants now work with advanced art supplies and techniques, such as acrylic paints, pastels, water colors, charcoals, photography, and sculpture.
The artists have gained recognition at the regional and state levels for the quality of their work.
