In their 50th year, the annual prizes honoring excellence in children’s literature were announced via video Thursday by Horn Book editor Roger Sutton and Linda Pizzuti Henry, managing director of the Globe.

In fiction, top honors went to Frances Hardinge’s Victorian murder mystery “The Lie Tree’’ and the nonfiction award went to Steve Sheinkin’s “Most Dangerous: Daniel Ellsberg and the Secret History of the Vietnam War.’’ The top picture book was “Jazz Day: The Making of a Famous Photograph,’’ Roxane Orgill’s series of poetic sketches revolving around an iconic 1958 image published in Esquire magazine. The book was illustrated by Francis Vallejo.

Sutton said that this year’s winners reflected “a range of both big­ and small­-d diversity, with choices reflecting intimate moments of contemporary child life as well as larger themes drawn from US and world history.’’

Pizzuti Henry offered her congratulations to the authors, noting that the Globe was proud of its connection to the program as it views the promotion of excellence in the arts and letters nationally as part of its mission.

The awards will be presented at a ceremony on Sept. 30 at Simmons College.
