A judge said insurers in litigation with Penn State claim a boy told football coach Joe Paterno in 1976 he had been molested by assistant Jerry Sandusky. Pennlive.com reported that the court order by Philadelphia Judge Gary Glazer also cites reports by unnamed assistant coaches that they witnessed inappropriate contact between Sandusky and children. Sandusky is serving decades in prison for sexual abuse of boys, the earliest incident in 1998. A Paterno family spokesman told Pennlive.com there’s no evidence to corroborate the new disclosure and that Paterno never covered up Sandusky’s actions. Sandusky was granted a May 20 hearing to prove his claims that prosecutors lied, withheld evidence, and leaked secret grand jury information to find additional victims in his effort to have charges dismissed or get a new trial . . . Texas A&M assistant coach Aaron Moorehead apologized for a series of tweets about loyalty and accountability he posted soon after a highly touted quarterback recruit announced he was breaking his verbal commitment to the Aggies. A few minutes after Tate Martell from Bishop Gorman High School in Las Vegas tweeted Wednesday night he was reopening his recruitment, Moorehead posted, “I feel sorry for ppl who never understand loyalty.’’

Vogel out as Pacers coach
Frank Vogel will not return as Indiana Pacers coach next season. Pacers president Larry Bird said the team will not renew Vogel’s contract. Bird said he believes it’s time for a new voice to lead the Pacers, keeping with his long-held philosophy on short shelf lives for coaches. Vogel was 250-181 in 5½ seasons with the Pacers. He led the team to the playoffs five times, including two Eastern Conference finals.
Curry unlikely Saturday
Stephen Curry is unlikely to play Saturday for the Golden State Warriors in Game 3 of the Western Conference semifinals at Portland, Ore., since he still hasn’t practiced on his sprained right knee . . . Washington Wizards point guard John Wall underwent surgery on both knees at the Cleveland Clinic Marymount and will begin a rehabilitation process immediately. Wall is expected to be ready for the start of next season, but his status for training camp is unknown and he won’t be available to play for Team USA in the Summer Olympics. Wall had loose particles taken out of his right knee and calcium deposits removed from his left patellar tendon . . . Former Lakers coach Byron Scott said he thought he had more time to right the ship before the team fired him last week. Scott told ESPN Wednesday that he was ‘‘surprised’’ and ‘‘shocked’’ by the move even though he led the Lakers to the two worst seasons in their history.

Jagr gets 1-year Florida deal
Jaromir Jagr, 44, agreed to a one-year contract to return to the Florida Panthers. Jagr had a team-best 66 points this season. The Panthers won the Atlantic Division title and set franchise records for points and wins before falling in the first round of the playoffs to the New York Islanders. Next season will be Jagr’s 23d in the NHL . . . Arizona Coyotes assistant general manager John Chayka was promoted to general manager, making the 26-year-old the youngest GM in league history and the first with a primarily analytics background . . . Washington’s Barry Trotz, Dallas’s Lindy Ruff, and Florida’s Gerard Gallant are the finalists for the Jack Adams Award as the NHL coach who has ‘‘contributed the most to his team’s success.’’ . . . The NHL, the Edmonton Oilers and Calgary Flames each donated $100,000 to the Canadian Red Cross relief efforts in fire-ravaged Fort McMurray, Alberta.

A’s Bassitt to have surgery
Oakland A’s righthander Chris Bassitt is scheduled to undergo reconstructive surgery on his injured pitching elbow Friday. Bassitt needs ulnar collateral ligament replacement surgery on his right elbow. Bassitt was 0-2 with a 6.11 ERA in five starts with the A's . . . Cleveland Indians catcher Roberto Perez will have surgery on his fractured right thumb Friday. Perez was injured while tagging a runner at the plate Saturday against Philadelphia. He was placed on the 15-day disabled list the following day when X-rays revealed the fracture.

Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray, and Rafael Nadal made their way into the Madrid Open tennis quarterfinals, each with straight-set wins. The top-ranked Djokovic beat Roberto BautistaAgut, 6-2, 6-1. Murray defeated Gilles Simon, 6-4, 6-2, and Nadal topped Sam Querrey,6-4, 6-2 . . . USA Volleyball extended the contract of women’s coach Karch Kiraly, who will lead the top-ranked Americans for the next Olympic cycle ahead of the 2020 Games in Tokyo . . . World Cup champions Brandi Chastain and Shannon MacMillan, and MLS commissioner Don Garber were elected to the National Soccer Hall of Fame. Chastain scored the winning goal in the 1999 World Cup final shootout against China. MacMillan was the 2002 US Soccer Female Player of the Year and Garber is in his 17th year as commissioner.
