Bird sightings

Recent bird sightings on Cape Cod (as of Dec. 30) as reported to the Massachusetts Audubon Society.

The mountain bluebird continues at Crane WMA in Falmouth.

Highlights from the Cape Cod Christmas Bird Count, which covers parts of Chatham, Orleans, Eastham, Harwich, and Brewster, included 26 great shearwaters, 2 Manx shearwaters, a canvasback, 2 Barrow’s goldeneyes, a ring-necked pheasant, a Pacific loon, a clapper rail, 2 semipalmated plovers, 21 greater yellowlegs, 2 dovekies, 2,760 razorbills, a laughing gull, 787 Bonaparte’s gulls, 3 Iceland gulls, a glaucous gull, a snowy owl, a short-eared owl, 3 merlins, 6 peregrine falcons, an Eastern phoebe, 10 marsh wrens, a blue-gray gnatcatcher, 68 Eastern bluebirds, 3 orange-crowned warblers, a Nashville warbler, 13 pine warblers, a Wilson’s warbler, a Northern parula, 3 yellow-breasted chats, an amazing 11 Baltimore orioles in East Orleans, and 2 pine siskins.

Highlights from the Truro Christmas Bird Count held on the 22nd included a Townsend’s solitaire and 2 Western kingbirds near Corn Hill in Truro, a snowy owl at Great Island in Wellfleet, both Manx and great shearwaters, a wood duck, an American woodcock, a little gull, 17 laughing gulls, a black guillemot, and a semipalmated plover.

Highlights of the ship-board Stellwagen Christmas Bird Count included 76 Northern fulmar, 56 great shearwaters, 3 pomarine jaegers, 38 common murres, an Atlantic puffin, and 42 black-legged kittiwakes.
