RE “GE is one tough customer when it comes to local tax assessments’’ (Page A1, Feb. 14): I livedin Stamford, Conn., from 1982 to 2014 before moving to Massachusetts. I was an elected member of Stamford’s Board of Representatives for nine years. Stamford has around $10 billion worth of commercial properties. Whenever properties were reassessed, the owners appealed the assessments. Many times they ended up in court. And sometimes the courts reduced the assessments, resulting in refunds of property taxes.
When my home’s assessment increased in 2009, I appealed it. Thousands of other residential property owners did the same. I got a reduction.
Appealing local property tax assessments is common, and makes good business sense. In no way is this limited to big corporations like General Electric.
