Jeremy Miller’s layup with less than a second left gave Northeastern a 65-63 victory over UNC Wilmington on Saturday night, giving the 10-5 Huskies their best 15-game start to a season since 2008-09.
Northeastern is now 2-0 in Colonial Atheltic Association play.
Quincy Ford paced Northeastern with 18 points and 14 rebounds, both game highs. Miller finished with 15 points and eight boards.
The Seahawks (9-4, 1-1) got 17 points and eight rebounds from Chris Flemmings.
Northeastern led by 5 at intermission and by as many as 10 in the second half.
But UNCW chipped away and tied it at 58 on a Flemmings jumper with 4:08 to go. Flemmings’s layup with 30 seconds left forged another tie before Miller won it for NU.
Providence 83, St. John’s 65 — Kris Dunn had 26 points, 9 rebounds, and 6 assists to lead the No. 12 Friars to a home victory, their eighth straight win.
Dunn scored 12 straight points for the Friars in the second half after the Red Storm closed within 56-50 with 9:30 remaining. Providence led, 43-31, at halftime and went up by as many as 17 points early in the second half before St. John’s went on its run.
A preseason All-American, Dunn cooled off the Red Storm with consecutive 3-pointers that helped the Friars (14-1, 2-0 Big East) re-establish control.
Providence’s Ben Bentil overcame a slow start to finish with 20 points and nine rebounds, while Rodney Bullock had 13 points and eight rebounds. Kyron Cartwright added 11 points, all in the first half.
Yankuba Sima had 14 points for St. John’s (7-8, 0-2), which lost its fifth straight.
Providence is coming off a 7-0 record in December. It’s the first time the team went undefeated in December since posting a 7-0 mark in 1988-89.
Providence hosts Marquette on Tuesday.
UConn 75, Tulane 67 — Rodney Purvis capped a 20-point performance with a clutch floater in the final minute as the Huskies held off the host Green Wave for their fifth straight victory.
Sterling Gibbs scored 13 Of his 16 points during the final 6:32 to help the Huskies (10-3, 1-0 American) avoid a stunning upset by the Green Wave (7-8, 0-2).
Daniel Hamilton added 19 for UConn, which is making a bid to get back into the Top 25, having received votes in the latest poll.
Louis Dabney had 14 points and Jernard Jarreau 13 points, 5 blocks and 2 steals for Tulane, which has lost two straight and four of five. Dylan Osetkowski added 11 points and 9 rebounds for the Green Wave, which trailed by 19 early in the second half, but briefly took a 60-59 lead before one of Gibbs’ four 3-pointers gave UConn the lead for good.
Lehigh 81, BU 73 — Tim Kempton’s 22 points and 11 rebounds propelled the Mountain Hawks (3-10, 1-1 Patriot) past the Terriers (7-8, 0-2) in Bethlehem, Pa.
BU trailed by 1 with 4:29 to go when Lehigh went on a 10-2 run for a 73-64 advantage with two minutes left. Nathan Dieudonne led the Terriers with 17 points.
Navy 65, Holy Cross 60 — A big game by Robert Champion — 20 points, seven boards — couldn’t lift the Crusaders (6-7, 1-1 Patriot) in Annapolis, Md.
Rhode Island 85, Saint Louis 57 — The host Rams (9-5) came out victorious in the Atlantic 10 opener for both teams. Four McGlynn had 16 points for URI and Earl Watson added 14.
Maine 98, Brown 92 — Kevin Little and Troy Reid-Knight made back-to-back 3-pointers in the final two minutes to help the host Black Bears hold on. Both teams are 4-9.
Yale 88, Hartford 53 — Justin Sears scored 24 points on 9-for-10 shooting to propel the Bulldogs (7-5) in West Hartford.
Hartford (5-10) was paced by Pancake Thomas, who scored 24 points and had five rebounds.
Michigan State 69, Minnesota 61 — At Minneapolis, Bryn Forbes scored 20 points as the top-ranked Spartans (14-1, 1-1 Big Ten) bounced back from their first loss.
Oklahoma 87, Iowa State 83 — Buddy Hield scored 22 points as the No. 3 Sooners beat the No. 11 Cyclones to match the second-best start in school history at 12-0.
On Monday night, the Sooners will play at No. 2 Kansas in what could be a No. 1 vs. No. 2 showdown after No. 1 Michigan State lost to Iowa on Tuesday night.
The Sooners nearly slipped on the way to the dream matchup. Iowa State led for most of the second half, and Oklahoma led by 2 and had the ball in the final minute before turning it over. Iowa State’s Monte Morris had a good look, but missed a 3-pointer with 5.8 seconds to go. Hield made two free with 3.5 seconds remaining to put the game out of reach.
Georges Niang scored 29 points, and Deonte Burton had 14 of his 19 points in the second half for Iowa State (11-2).
Maryland 72, Northwestern 59 — Melo Trimble scored 24 points, Rasheed Sulaimon added 16 points, and the No. 4 Terrapins won in Evanston, Ill.
Trimble scored 17 points in the second half. Sulaimon had 13 in the first, helping the Terrapins (13-1, 2-0 Big Ten) grab a 40-20 lead on the way to their seventh straight victory.
They also gave coach Mark Turgeon his 100th victory in five seasons at Maryland and snapped a 10-game winning streak for Northwestern (13-2, 1-1).
Kentucky 83, Mississippi 61 — Guard Tyler Ulis had 20 points and 10 assists to help the No. 10 Wildcats take the Southeastern Conference opener for both teams in Lexington, Ky.
Sparked by Ulis, Kentucky (11-2) ended the Rebels’ seven-game winning streak and limited Stefan Moody to 8 points in the first half, hindering the Rebels’ hopes for an upset.
Jamal Murray made four of Kentucky’s seven 3-pointers and had 18 points. Marcus Lee added 13. Despite a slow start, Moody led the Rebels (10-3) with 23 points. Sebastian Saiz followed with 12.
Women’s basketball
VCU 74, UMass 66 — The Rams (12-2) upended the Minutewomen (6-7) in the teams’ Atlantic 10 opener in Amherst. Cierra Dillard had 17 points for UMass, which had won three in a row.
Harvard 60, Samford 54 — AnnMarie Healy provided 16 points and the Crimson (5-7) outscored the Bulldogs, 21-10, in the opening quarter in Birmingham, Ala.
Lehigh 73, BU 66 — The host Terriers fell to 0-13 (0-2 Patriot) despite going on a 20-5 run during the fourth quarter. Sarah Hope was 5 for 5 from deep in scoring 18 points for BU.
Holy Cross 57, Navy 49 — Infiniti Thomas-Waheed had a career-high 21 points and Molly Hourigan notched a personal-best 17 rebounds in guiding the Crusaders (5-8, 2-0 Patriot) in Worcester.
Football
TaxSlayer Bowl — Terry Godwin threw a 44-yard TD pass on a trick play and also had a TD catch, helping Georgia beat Penn State, 24-17, in Jacksonville, Fla., under interim coach Bryan McClendon.
Incoming coach Kirby Smart, who is replacing Mark Richt, watched from the stands.
The Bulldogs (10-3) closed the season with five straight wins.
Penn State (7-6) played more than half the game without star quarterback Christian Hackenberg, who injured his throwing shoulder when tackled. X-rays came back normal. After the game, the junior said he is entering the NFL Draft. Hackenberg is the school’s all-time leader in yards passing (8,457) and touchdowns (48).
Liberty Bowl — Alex Collins ran for 185 yards and three scores, and Arkansas (8-5) capped its season with a 45-23 victory over Kansas State in Memphis.
Collins, who has rushed for more than 1,000 yards each of the last three seasons, indicated after the game he hadn’t decided whether to return for his senior year.
Ranked 18th to open the season, Arkansas stumbled through a 1-3 start that knocked the Razorbacks out of the Top 25. But Bret Bielema’s team turned things around won six of their last seven games.
Arkansas snapped Kansas State’s three-game winning streak in front of a sellout crowd of 61,136.
Kansas State (6-7) finished a game below .500 for the first time since Bill Snyder began his second stint as coach in 2009.
Men’s hockey
Union 3, Merrimack 2 — Brett Supinski’s second-period goal was the difference for the Dutchmen (8-6-4), who upended the No. 20 Warriors (7-6-5) in the opening round of the Ledyard Classic in Hanover, N.H.
Women’s hockey
Northeastern 5, Dartmouth 2 — Kendall Coyne registered two goals and one assist in boosting the eighth-ranked Huskies (14-4-1) at Matthews Arena.
