A movie about the life of Malcolm Butler is in the works.
The Hollywood Reporter says Daniel Levin has acquired Butler’s life rights for the biopic, and he knows a good subject when he sees one. Levin acquired Saroo Brierley’s rights to make the movie “Lion,’’ which is up for six Oscars now. (Not bad!) According to THR, the Butler movie will be called “The Secondary’’ and will tell the story of how he didn’t get drafted and was running the fryolator at Popeyes when his agent, Derek Simpson, scored him a tryout with the New England Patriots. And the rest, as they say, is history.
“ ‘Lion’ and ‘The Secondary’ are against-all-odds stories of struggle and inspiration,’’ Levin said to The Hollywood Reporter. “Derek would not stop until Malcolm got a chance.’’
In a 2014 interview with the Providence Journal, Butler attributed his success to his “diehard attitude to never give up.’’
“If I gave up I probably would’ve been the manager at Popeyes right now, if anything,’’ Butler said. “I didn’t give up. I just stuck with it and just believed.’’
