Driven by physical defense and an effective power play, the Belmont boys’ hockey team took down visiting Winchester, 4-1, for the first time in four years at Viglirolo Skating Rink on Saturday.
“It was great, I loved it,’’ said junior forward Will Domeniconi, who drove Belmont’s offense with two goals and an assist. “They beat us six times in the last three years, nothing better than going out there and beating them.’’
Belmont (6-2-2, 4-2-0 Middlesex League Liberty Division) got out to an early lead thanks to junior Steve Rizzuto, who found the back of the net at 3:33 in the first period. Winchester (3-6-0, 2-4-0) tied the game a few minutes later, junior Robbie Falso feeding off strong play from his linemates. Winchester’s top line flashed dynamic skill and speed throughout the contest, but were held in check by the Belmont defense after the early goal.
“We have a very veteran defensive core from goalie out,’’ said Belmont coach Fred Allard. “We do a pretty good job of keeping top players on the perimeter, which minimizes shots they take, and if we can keep the shots on the outside . . . we trust our goalie will keep them out of the net.’’
Domeniconi potted his first goal of the game on a power play early in the second, and the physicality only increased from that point.
The tension nearly boiled over at the end of the second period, when Belmont senior Kevin Quirk collided with Winchester goalie Cam Offner as time expired in the period. The two traded shoves and players from both sides joined the scrum until the referees regained control of the situation and dished out two misconduct penalties to each school.
Belmont stayed focused in the third however, and Domeniconi netted another power-play goal early in the frame to put his team up two and put the game out of reach.
With 24 seconds left, junior Connor Dacey scored to seal the victory.
“For our seniors, it’s the very first time they’ve beaten Winchester,’’ Allard said. “Early in the season we set goals for the team, and this was definitely one of them. I’m happy for them.’’
