Malden, South Hadley pedestrians killed
Two accidents remain under investigation

A Malden man was fatally injured Monday night when he was struck by a car while walking near a main intersection in Malden, officials said.

The man was identified as Piere Simon, 60, of Malden, Middlesex District Attorney Marian T. Ryan’s office said.

Simon was struck near the intersection of Salem and Albion streets around 6 p.m. Monday, Ryan’s office said in a statement. He was pronounced dead upon arrival at Melrose-Wakefield Hospital.

Ryan’s office said there was an “open and active investigation’’ ongoing into Simon’s death. It was not a hit and run crash, Ryan’s office said.

Investigators are also looking into the cause of a fatal collision in South Hadley Monday evening.

A man was struck and killed by a car on Route 202 in the 600 area of Granby Road at around 5:30 p.m.

The man who was hit was pronounced dead at the scene, Northwestern District Attorney David Sullivan’s office said. His name has not been released.

He was struck within the southbound lane of Route 202, Sullivan’s office said.

The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene and cooperated with officials, Sullivan’s office said. No charges or citations have been issued. Sullivan’s office said no drugs or alcohol were involved in the crash.

The South Hadley police department, Massachusetts State Police detectives unit, and the State Police collision analysis and reconstruction section are investigating the incident.
